Whether it’s teaching basic obedience, resolving problem behaviors or teaching your old dog new tricks, the Kentucky Humane Society’s comprehensive behavior training program is designed to strengthen the bond between pets and owners through education and positive training.

KHS offers a variety of classes for pets of all ages and ability levels, with classes starting throughout the year at locations all over town, as well as in-home, private training.

Our behavior training program was established in 2000 to help remedy one of the primary reasons pets are surrendered to KHS, behavior problems. Since then, we’ve helped thousands of owners and pets remain "lifelong friends" by giving them the resources to achieve happy, healthy relationships through positive reinforcement training.

All behavior training fees help support the KHS mission.

Contact our Behavior Manager at (502) 253-2883 to register for a group class, schedule a private session or get information and helpful tips over the phone.

Beginner Classes

“Positively Puppies”
(8 weeks to 5 months)
This is the most important obedience class you and your dog will ever take, as it helps remedy bad habits before they are formed. Puppies up to 5 months will learn basic manners such as sit, down, coming when called, loose leash walking and playing well with others. Owners learn how to resolve common puppy behaviors, including play-biting and destructive chewing, as well as how to house train your new friend. $79

“Manners for Life”
(Over 5 months)
This is a fun beginner-level obedience course for young adult and adult dogs who need to learn the basics. Your dog will learn sit, down and stay, as well as coming when called, loose leash walking and more! Lessons also address negative canine behaviors, such as jumping on people. $79

“Wallflower” Class for Shy Dogs
Does your bashful pooch need some self-confidence? Does he shrink away when people or dogs approach? This class uses gentle desensitization techniques to help your shy pup come out of his shell. If your dog has any aggression, see the "Feisty Fido" class or contact the behavior manager about private training. $79

Intermediate Classes

“Tricks for Treats”
Take your dog to the next level of obedience! While building your pet’s canine IQ, this course will teach you tricks that are a fun way to spend quality time with your companion long after the course is over. Dogs learn to shake, high five, wave, bow, play dead, crawl and more. Class is loaded with tests to reinforce the skills you and your partner will learn. $79

**NEW CLASS**
Feisty Fido
Are neighborhood walks a disaster filled with barking and lunging? Or, perhaps you've given up on walking your dog out of frustration and embarrassment? Learn how to prevent, treat and recondition reactivity and aggression in dog-aggressive canines. Class space is limited! A Gentle Leader headcollar is required for class. $150

Advanced Classes

“Canine Good Citizen®”
This course is an American Kennel Club (AKC) certification program designed to reward owners of dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. Having a well-mannered pet will be a plus when visiting with friends and family or your vet, landlord or insurance company! $79
